Before building your first layout, it helps to understand a few key ideas that make Divi Handoff work. Don't worry—these are simpler than they sound.

Core Concepts​

Divi Handoff works with three main ideas:

Flexible Content​

Flexible Content is like a container that holds different types of content sections. Each section type (called a "layout") has its own form fields. When editing a page, content editors can choose which sections to add, remove them, or change their order to build the page they want.

Think of it like building with Divi's structure:

  • Flexible Content field = A container for different types of sections
  • Layout = A type of section (e.g., "Hero Section," "Team Member," "Testimonial")
  • Sub-fields = The form fields within each layout (e.g., title, description, image)

Each layout you create in Flexible Content becomes a Section in your Divi Handoff Layout, which you can design with Rows and Modules just like any Divi page.

Layout Mapping​

Layout mapping is how you connect your Flexible Content layouts to your Divi Handoff Layouts (which are built with Sections, Rows, and Modules). You can create multiple visual styles for the same type of content, so editors can pick which design they want to use.

Getting Content Into Your Design​

This is how the text, images, and other content from your fields automatically appears in your Divi modules. Divi Handoff has two ways to do this: special Handoff modules that do it automatically, or you can connect fields manually using Divi's Dynamic Content feature.

How They Work Together​

Here's the simple version:

  1. Content editors fill in forms with their content (text, images, etc.)
  2. Layout mapping tells Divi Handoff which design to use for each type of content
  3. Content appears in your designed layout automatically

This means:

  • Content editors just fill in forms—they don't touch the design
  • You create the designs—you don't need to add content manually
  • Pages look perfect every time because the design stays locked
