General Questions

What's the difference between SCF and ACF Pro?

Q: What's the difference between SCF and ACF Pro? Which should I use?

A: SCF (Secure Custom Fields) is a free, community-maintained fork of ACF that includes Flexible Content fields at no cost. ACF Pro is the paid version of Advanced Custom Fields that also includes Flexible Content. Both work identically with Divi Handoff.

Choose SCF if:

  • You want a free solution
  • You're starting a new project
  • You don't have an existing ACF Pro license

Choose ACF Pro if:

  • You already have an ACF Pro license
  • You need ACF Pro-specific add-ons
  • You prefer Delicious Brains' support

Does Divi Handoff work with Divi 4?

Q: Can I use Divi Handoff with Divi 4?

A: No, Divi Handoff requires Divi 5 (Divi Theme). The plugin uses Divi 5's module architecture and visual builder APIs, which are not available in Divi 4.

If you're still on Divi 4, you'll need to upgrade to Divi 5 before installing Divi Handoff.

Can I use the free version of ACF?

Q: Can I use regular ACF (free version) with Divi Handoff?

A: No, the free version of ACF does not include Flexible Content fields, which Divi Handoff requires. You need either:

  • SCF (Secure Custom Fields) - Free, includes Flexible Content
  • ACF Pro - Paid, includes Flexible Content

Does Divi Handoff work with Extra theme?

Q: Can I use Divi Handoff with the Extra theme?

A: No, Divi Handoff only works with the Divi Theme (Divi 5). The Extra theme uses a different architecture and is not compatible with Divi Handoff.

Usage Questions

Can one SCF/ACF layout use multiple Divi layouts?

Q: I have a "Hero Section" layout in my Flexible Content. Can I create multiple visual designs for it?

A: Yes! This is one of Divi Handoff's most powerful features. You can create multiple Divi Handoff Layouts that map to the same SCF/ACF Flexible Content layout.

How it works:

  1. Create your SCF/ACF layout (e.g., "Hero Section") with sub-fields
  2. Create multiple Divi Handoff Layouts, each mapped to "Hero Section"
  3. When editing a page, add a "Hero Section" row
  4. Choose which Divi Handoff Layout to use for that specific instance

This allows you to have different visual representations of the same content structure—for example, a dark hero, a light hero, or a full-width hero—all using the same fields.

Do I have to use Handoff modules?

Q: Must I use the Handoff Text, Handoff Image, and other Handoff modules? Or can I use regular Divi modules?

A: You can use any Divi module with Dynamic Content to pull data from Flexible Content fields. The Handoff modules are convenient because they automatically detect the layout context, but they're not required.

Using Standard Divi Modules:

  1. Add any Divi module (Text, Image, etc.)
  2. Click the Dynamic Content icon in the field you want to populate
  3. Select SCF / ACF Pro Flexible Content Fields
  4. Choose the sub-field to display

Advantages of Handoff Modules:

  • Automatically bound to the current layout context
  • Simpler setup for common use cases
  • Built-in conditional visibility options

How do I display a repeater field?

Q: I have a repeater field inside my Flexible Content layout. How do I display it?

A: Use the Handoff Repeater module. It loops through each row in your repeater field and renders child modules for each item.

Steps:

  1. Add the Handoff Repeater module to your layout
  2. Select the repeater field from the Repeater Field setting
  3. Add child modules inside the repeater (Handoff Text, Handoff Image, etc.)
  4. Child modules automatically access the current repeater row's fields

The Handoff Repeater also supports carousel/slider display using Slick.js for testimonials, team members, galleries, and more.

How do I show/hide content based on field values?

Q: I want to show a "Featured" badge only when a checkbox is checked. Is this possible?

A: Yes, use the Conditional Visibility feature available in all Handoff modules.

Steps:

  1. Add a True/False or Select field to your SCF/ACF layout
  2. In the Divi module's Advanced settings, find Condition Field
  3. Enter the field name (e.g., is_featured)
  4. Set Condition Value to the expected value (e.g., 1 for true)
  5. The module only renders when the condition matches

Common Examples:

  • Boolean check: field=is_featured, value=1
  • Select option: field=style, value=dark
  • Not empty: field=video_url, value=not_empty

Can I set dynamic background images?

Q: Can I set a module or section's background image from a Flexible Content field?

A: Yes, there are two methods:

Method 1: Background from Layout Field

  1. In the module settings, find Background from SCF / ACF Pro Layout Field
  2. Select the image field
  3. The background populates automatically

Method 2: Dynamic Content

  1. Go to the module's Background settings
  2. Click the Dynamic Content icon next to the background image option
  3. Select your image field

Both methods support images and colors—if the field contains a hex color value, it sets the background color instead of an image.

Technical Questions

Where is demo content stored?

Q: I imported the demo content. Where does it go, and how do I remove it?

A: The demo content creates:

  • Field Groups - Sample SCF/ACF field groups with Flexible Content
  • Divi Handoff Layouts - Pre-built layouts mapped to the demo fields
  • Demo Page - A page with sample content using the layouts

To remove the demo content:

  1. Go to Settings → Divi Handoff
  2. Click Remove Demo Content
  3. All demo items are deleted (your custom content is preserved)

What happens if I deactivate SCF/ACF?

Q: What happens to my content if I deactivate SCF or ACF Pro?

A: Your content data remains stored in the WordPress database, but:

  • Divi Handoff Layouts will stop rendering field content
  • The page will show empty or broken layouts
  • Admin notices will appear indicating SCF/ACF is required

Simply reactivate SCF or ACF Pro to restore functionality. Your data is preserved.

Can I use Divi Handoff with page builders other than Divi?

Q: Can I use Divi Handoff with Elementor, Beaver Builder, or other page builders?

A: No, Divi Handoff is specifically designed for Divi 5 and uses its module architecture. It is not compatible with other page builders.

Does Divi Handoff work with Divi Library layouts?

Q: Can I use Divi Handoff Layouts as global layouts in the Divi Library?

A: Divi Handoff Layouts are a separate custom post type designed specifically for Flexible Content rendering. They function differently from Divi Library layouts:

  • Divi Handoff Layouts - Templates for rendering Flexible Content data
  • Divi Library Layouts - Reusable design components

You build Divi Handoff Layouts using the Divi Builder, but they serve a different purpose than Library layouts.

Is Divi Handoff multisite compatible?

Q: Does Divi Handoff work on WordPress multisite installations?

A: Yes, Divi Handoff works on multisite installations. Install and activate the plugin on each site where you want to use it. Network activation is also supported.
