Empty options or counts wrong

Symptom​

Filter choices that should be hidden still appear, options that should stay visible disappear, or the numbers next to filter options do not match the results list.

Applies To​

  • Filter Posts empty-option and count settings
  • Catalog index–backed facet counts
  • Conditional filters combined with empty-option rules

Likely Causes​

  1. Module-level and item-level empty-option settings disagree — Parent Filter Posts and child Filter Posts Item use different empty behaviors.
  2. Stale catalog or transient cache — Counts come from outdated indexed IDs or cached responses.
  3. Conditional filters hide fields unexpectedly — Logic rules remove options that look “empty” but are actually conditional. See Conditional filters.
  4. Count update scope — Count-by-self / update-count settings do not match the multi-filter setup you expect.

Fix​

Step 1: Review empty-option settings​

  1. Read Empty filter options for module-level vs filter-level behavior.
  2. Align Filter Posts and each Filter Posts Item to the same empty-option strategy.
  3. Retest with a single filter first, then add filters one at a time.

Step 2: Clear cache and refresh indexes​

  1. Clear transient cache under Caching and performance.
  2. If you use a catalog engine, rebuild or sync the index and confirm hybrid fallback. See Stale or wrong results.
  1. Open Filter Posts settings related to updating option counts.
  2. Confirm counts are enabled for the controls that show numbers.
  3. Save, purge cache, and hard-refresh the front end.

Step 4: Disable conditional logic temporarily​

  1. Turn off conditional rules on Filter Posts Items.
  2. Retest empty options and counts.
  3. Re-enable rules one by one to find the conflicting condition.

Verify​

Pick a category or attribute with a known product count. The option label count (if shown) should match the results list after filtering, and empty choices should follow your empty-option settings.

Collect for Support​

If the fix does not work, collect:

  • Screenshots of Filter Posts and Filter Posts Item empty-option / count settings
  • Catalog engine and whether caching is on
  • Example taxonomy or attribute that shows the wrong count
  • Whether conditional filters are enabled
